{"id":619,"date":"2015-11-30T19:23:36","date_gmt":"2015-11-30T19:23:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kula.si\/?p=619"},"modified":"2016-10-24T17:52:59","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T17:52:59","slug":"2016-maynooth-university-ethnography-winter-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kula.si\/?p=619","title":{"rendered":"2016 Maynooth University Ethnography Winter School"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><b>201<\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">6 Maynooth University Ethnography Winter School<\/span><\/b><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Department of Anthropology at Maynooth University is pleased to announce its 2016 Winter School in Ethnography, 25 to 29 January 2016<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">The school will bring together postgraduate students, professional researchers, and others for focused reflection on ethnography today.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">Offered as a 5 credit postgraduate module, and delivered over one week, the school will be structured as a workshop or\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">laboratory,<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">enabling students, established scholars, and others to work through challenges and opportunities related to their own research and writing projects in dialogue and critical engagement with each other.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"FR\">Procedures\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">may be available for students from Irish universities beyond Maynooth to receive credit for their work.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">People can also participate in the course without officially enrolling for credit.\u00a0 It is the hope of the Department of Anthropology that making the School open in this manner will attract a wide variety of ethnographers enabling vigorous debate and rigorous analysis.<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><span lang=\"EN-US\">Featured scholars in 2016<\/span><\/u><u>:<\/u><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Don Kulick\u00a0<\/span>(<span lang=\"EN-US\">University of Uppsala<\/span>)\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Ciara Kierans (University of Liverpool)<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kalpana Shankar (School of Information and Communication Studies, UCD)<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Karen Till (Department of Geography, NUI Maynooth)<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rebecca King O&#8217;Riain (Sociology, NUI Maynooth)<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Plus staff members of Maynooth<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">s Department of Anthropology<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><span lang=\"FR\">Course description:<\/span><\/u><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div>AN862:\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">Ethnography Winter School<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">This module is an advanced introduction to ethnography.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">The course is delivered in a burst-format over one week, and features the collaborative teaching of practicing ethnographers, including both academics and professional researchers, on the island of Ireland.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">Ethnography<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">is more than a\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<span lang=\"EN-US\">method<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span>:\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">it comprises a whole style of thought encompassing forms of observation, analysis, and writing.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">The module therefore emphasises analysis and theory<\/span>\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">in addition<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">the research practices (interviewing, participant observation, note-taking) conventionally associated with qualitative research methodology.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">Themes covered include:<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">culture and difference, contexts and cases (working in NGOs, clinics, corporations), styles of representation and the politics of knowledge, research ethics and ethnographic engagement.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">The module is also structured as a workshop, so that ethnographers at various stages of their careers &#8212; from students planning proposals, to dissertation writers analysing previously collected material, to research professionals who may not be based in academia &#8212; will be able to produce work within the module that relates to their respective career stages, locations, and goals.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">This work, such as a proposal draft or a stretch of ethnographic writing, forms the basis for module assessment.<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><span lang=\"EN-US\">Course Location and Schedule:<\/span><\/u><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Winter School will meet Maynooth University<\/span>\u00a0campus\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">from 10AM to 5PM, with appropriate breaks, from Monday to Friday, 25 to 29 January 2016.\u00a0 A more detailed timetable can be obtained by contacting the course convener (as indicated below).<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">The course is co-convened by Drs.
